ASCO Special Awards 2013 - Leading Investigators Honored for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Oncology

Seventeen leaders in oncology are to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of people living with cancer. Among the awardees are the director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a scientist belonging to the group that performed the first genome-wide association study of BRCA2 breast cancer.
Each year through its Special Awards Program, ASCO recognizes researchers, patient advocates, and leaders of the global oncology community who, through their work, have made significant contributions to enhancing cancer care. These recipients of ASCO’s highest, most prestigious awards collectively represent significant strides in cancer treatment and leadership in the oncology community.
“The recipients of this year’s awards are the past, present and future of our field,” said Michael P. Link, MD, Immediate Past President of ASCO and Chair of the Special Awards Selection Committee. “They have contributed tremendously to the body of work that is improving the treatment and care of people with cancer. It is our honor to bestow these awards upon them.”

Stop Cancer Now! invitación

La versión final de la Declaración WOF y una copia de la invitación Stop Cancer Now! ha aparecido como un aviso en International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, El País, La Repubblica y Neue Zürcher Zeitung en el Día Mundial del Cáncer ? el 4 de Febrero.  También hoy la invitación Stop Cancer Now! es publicado en The Lancet junto a un comentario escrito por el Prof. Franco Cavalli.  También, un artículo sobre WOF también será publicado en la revista Cancer World magazine (www.cancerworld.org).

La Declaración WOF ha sido traducida al Francés, Alemán, Italiano y Español y todas las versions serán publicadas en el área WOF de lapágine web de ESO el 4 de Febrero de 2013.

Stop Cancer Now! appeal

The final version of the WOF Statement and a copy of the Stop Cancer Now! appeal has appeared as an advertisement in the International Herald Tribune, Le Monde, El País, La Repubblica and Neue Zürcher Zeitung on World Cancer Day - the 4th of February. Also today the Stop Cancer Now! appeal is published  in The Lancet alongside a commentary written by Prof. Franco Cavalli.  Also, an article on WOF will also be published Cancer World magazine (www.cancerworld.org).

The WOF Statement has been translated into French, German, Italian and Spanish and all language versions will be posted on the WOF area of the ESO website on the 4th February 2013.

A teaser video on the WOF and the Appeal has been prepared and can be viewed at www.worldoncologyforum.org.  We are also preparing a special film on the Stop Cancer Now! Appeal which will be posted on the website on the 4th of February.

The European School of Oncology in co-operation with Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology is holding a series of distance learning programmes on the Internet, called 'e-sessions': e-grandrounds and e-oncoreviews.
e-grandrounds: are weekly sessions on hot-topics organised without commercial sponsorship and are CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
e-oncoreviews: are monthly sessions designed to offer a balance and comprehensive overview on a specific topic, be it a tumour type, a type of therapy, diagnostic or therapeutic approach. Some e-oncoreviews are organised in collaboration with the School's sponsors, whilst ESO-organised sessions are held in co-operation with Nature Reviews in Clinical Oncology and Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology and CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.

Participants are invited to attend the sessions live:
- e-grandrounds: every Thursday at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- e-oncoreviews: the first Tuesday of the month at the same time (18:15-19:00 CET)
- or the Recorded Session that is available 24 hours after the session live.
In both modes, attendants participate in remote, without webcam and without appearing in the system.

IV ALATRO Congress

The Asociación Latinoamericana de Terapia Radiante Oncológica (ALATRO) informs that next 2013 they will carry out the IV ALATRO Congress within the beautiful city of Cartagena de Indias, during the days 28 to 31 of July, 2013.

They also inform that personalities representative of radiotherapy oncology at internacional level will attend, and there will be a multidisciplinary scientific program that will include such specialities as: oncology, nursing, medical physics, radiologists, etc.

Those interested in attending can register until March 1, 2013, which will grant a more lower cost due to early registration.  The deadline for the reception and/or modification of abstracts is April 1, 2013.

Como sabrán, JSMO, que fuera fundada en 2002, es una sociedad oncológica profesional comprometida a conquistar el cáncer a través de la investigación, la educación, la prevención y ofrecer una atención al paciente de alta calidad en Japón.  La sociedad ha crecido a su actual tamaño de alrededor de 8,000 socios, y más de 1,000 socios son se inscriben cada año.

As you may know, JSMO, which was founded in 2002, is a professional oncology society committed to conquering cancer through research, education, prevention and offer of high quality patient care in Japan.  The society has grown to its present size of about 8,000 members, and more than 1,000 members are newly added each year.

Pero es el cáncer de mama, como amenaza potencial el que naturalmente acapara la mayor parte de los recursos, tanto en prevención, asistencia, docencia e investigación. Son estas facetas las que en Cursos y Congresos suscitan el mayor interés lo que motiva una gran  presencia.
La actualización de las mejores estrategias a nivel más amplio, tanto Científico como en su ámbito de aplicación es lo que pretendemos en 1er Congreso Español de la Mama.
Movidos por esa situación,  la Sociedad Española de Senología y Patología Mamaria (SESPM) y la Sociedad Española de Diagnóstico por la Imagen en Mama (SEDIM), han  generado la idea, de que el desarrollo de un evento a nivel nacional, que agrupe a las Sociedades Científicas concurrentes en la Salud Mamaria, puede incrementar el beneficio científico de los mismos.

Breast Pathology and specially breast cancer, assumes a problema that in general terms, needs a significant multidisciplinary medical attention with multiple variables, in human resources as well as material ones.
On a daily basis thousands of Elath professionals in our country, whether basic or assistance, and in different levels, dedicate their work so that breast health is preserved in a global manner.
But it is breast cancer, as a potencial treta the one that naturally captures a great part of resources, such as in prevention, assistance, teaching and research.  These are the facets that in Courses and Congresses attract most interest which motivates a high attendance.
The update of the best strategies at a more higher level, whether Scientific as well as in the field of application is what we pretend in the 1st Spanish Breast Congress.
Moved by said situation, the Spanish Society of Senology and Breast Pathology (SESPM) and the Spanish Society of Diagnosis through Breast Image (SEDIM), have generated the idea, that the development of an event at national level, that groups the Scientific Societies contributory in Breast Health, can increase the scientific benefit of same.

5º Congreso Internacional del Control del Cáncer

El Congreso comenzará con una Ceremonia de Apertura y Recepción de Bienvenida el Domingo, Noviembre 3, 2013, seguido de dos días y medio de Congreso con Sesiones Plenarias y Workshops simultáneos.
El idioma oficial del Congreso es el inglés.  Se proveerá traducción simultánea al español para todas las Sesiones Plenarias.

Partiendo de los logros de los ICCC 1, 2, 3 y 4 el 5º Congreso Internacional de Control del Cáncer continuará despertando conciencia sobre el control del cáncer/ENT, promoviendo transferencia de conocimiento, apoyando la construcción de capacidades, mejorando la participación y promoviendo la colaboración entre organizaciones, instituciones, la política, la práctica y la sociedad civil para aumentar el control global del cáncer and enfermedades no transmisibles.  Los temas del Congreso incluyen enfoques intersectoriales al control de factores de riesgo para cáncer y ENTs, integración y coordinación del sistema de salud, alineamiento de la salud poblacional y práctica médica y ciencia para servir, la práctica y la política (transferencia de conocimientos).
El propósito del Congreso es discutir ‘qué sería necesario para convertir nuestro actual conocimiento del control del cáncer en instrucciones y acciones que mejorarán los resultados del cáncer y ENT de la población?’ El actual estado de conocimiento será mencionado en los materiales de pre-lectura del Congreso y a través de presentaciones plenarias.  Sin embargo, el Congreso no trata sobre discutir el presente contenido de conocimiento, sino sobre aplicar ‘lo que sabemos sobre lo que hacemos’.

5th International Cancer Control Congress (ICCC5)
November 3-6, 2013 ? Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center - Lima, Peru

The Congress will start with an Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception on Sunday, November 3, 2013, followed by two and a half Congress days with Plenary Sessions and concurrent Workshops.
The official language of the Congress is English. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be provided for all Plenary Sessions.

Building on the achievements of the ICCC 1, 2, 3 and 4 the 5th International Cancer Control Congress will continue to raise cancer/NCD control awareness, promote knowledge transfer, support capacity building, improve participation and promote collaboration between organizations, institutions, policy, practice and civil society to enhance global control of cancer and non-communicable diseases. The themes of the Congress include cross-sectoral approaches to the control of risk factors for cancer and NCD’s, health system integration and coordination, alignment of population-health and medical practice and science to service, practice and policy (knowledge transfer).
The purpose of the Congress is to discuss ‘what would be necessary to convert our current knowledge of cancer control into directions and actions that will enhance population cancer and NCD outcomes?’ The current state of knowledge will be referenced in Congress pre-reading materials and through plenary presentation(s). However, the Congress is not about discussing current knowledge content, but rather about applying ‘what we know to what we do’.

Ethnic Research Initiative (ERI)

La Misión de ERI es reducir la incidencia del cáncer, morbilidad y mortalidad en poblaciones étnicamente diversas alrededor del globo fomentando investigación, educación y tutoría básica, epidemiológica y traslacional.
En ERI, una organización sin fines de lucro, apoyan la investigación, educación y tutoría que ayudará avanzar en la comprensión y conocimiento de determinantes étnicos del cáncer. 

Muchos países étnicamente diversas en Asia, Latinoamérica, Medio Oriente y Norte de Africa carecen de servicios adecuados para el cáncer para screening y tratamiento y así experimentar altas tasas de mortalidad comparado a otros países con más avanzados diagnóstico y tratamiento del cáncer. Adicionalmente, los enfoques de diagnóstico y tratamiento varían mucho debido a diferencias en normas culturales, sistemas de salud, y condiciones socio-económicas. En este medio ambiente, un solo enfoque al control y prevención del cáncer en todos los países será ineficaz.  Por lo tanto, la identificación del impacto de la etnicidad en el riesgo del cáncer y sus etiologías es esencial.

En ERI el objetivo está dirigido a financiar investigación en áreas tales como patogénesis molecular, genética, epigenética como también como determinaciones de factor de riesgo para reducir la incidencia y mortalidad del cáncer en estas poblaciones étnicas. ERI apoya tutorías para promover la excelencia en investigadores científicos que promoverán el conocimiento y entendimiento de los determinantes étnicos del cáncer. ERI también impulsa el entendimiento y conocimiento del establecimiento medico y creadores de políticas en estas comunidades sobre el impacto de la etnicidad en el cáncer.

Ethnic Research Initiative (ERI)

ERI’s Mission is to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality in ethnically diverse populations around the globe by strategically fostering basic, epidemiological and translational research, education and mentorship.
At ERI, a non-profit organization*, they support research, education and mentorship that will help advance understanding and knowledge of ethnic determinants of cancer. 

Many ethnically diverse countries in Asia, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa lack adequate cancer services for screening and treatment and thus experience higher mortality rates compared to other countries with more advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, approaches to diagnosis and treatment vary greatly due to differences in cultural norms, health care systems, and socio-economic conditions. In this environment, a single approach to cancer control and prevention in all countries will be ineffective. Therefore, identification of the impact of ethnicity on cancer risk and cancer etiologies is essential.

At ERI aim is directed to fund research in areas such as molecular pathogenesis, genetics, epigenetics as well as risk factor determinations to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in these ethnic populations. ERI supports mentorships to promote excellence in scientific investigators who will advance knowledge and understanding of the ethnic determinants of cancer. ERI also further the understanding and knowledge of the medical establishment and policy makers in these communities about the impact of ethnicity on cancer.
