Declaración de la sociedad civil latinoamericana frente a la emergencia sanitaria que representan ENT
Las enfermedades no transmisibles profundizan la pobreza y la inequidad

Más de 40 organizaciones de la sociedad civil de América Latina reunidas en Buenos Aires, lanzaron el 4 de Marzo de 2011  la Coalición Latinoamérica Saludable (CLAS) y dieron a conocer una declaración en la que reconocen la suma gravedad del impacto de las enfermedades no transmisibles (ENT) en la región, no solo como una emergencia sanitaria sino como un problema de desarrollo humano y un obstáculo en la lucha contra la pobreza. Por ello,
la CLAS instó a los jefes y jefas de Estado a participar de la reunión de alto nivel de las Naciones Unidas para las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles con el fin de poner en agenda internacional un plan de acción para la prevención, control y tratamiento de estas enfermedades.

Latin American civil society declaration on the health emergency due to NCDs
Non –communicable diseases increase poverty and inequality

More than 40 Latin American civil society organizations met in Buenos Aires on March 4, 2011 to launch the Healthy Latin American Coalition (HLAC) and develop a declaration recognizing the grave impact of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the region, not only as a health emergency but as a deterrent to human development and an obstacle in the fight to prevent poverty. Therefore, the HLAC urges the Heads of State to participate in the high level
United Nations meeting on non-communicable chronic diseases with the goal of putting a plan of action for the prevention, control and treatment of these diseases on the international agenda.

MCCLR International Conference

Sociedades Oncológicas Avanzan en el Cuidado del Cáncer alrededor del mundo

Avanzando la Investigación un Objetivo de Sociedad Latinoamericana
Fundada en 2004, SLACOM-la Sociedad Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Oncología Médica-ya tiene 2,000 socios. Incluye toda Sud América y América Central como asimismo el Caribe.  Como es de esperar en tan enorme área, el predominio de tumores varía ampliamente. El fundador y Presidente de SLACOM, Eduardo -Cazap, MD, un médico oncólogo e investigador del cáncer en Buenos Aires, describe alguna de estas variaciones:

La incidencia del cáncer y las tasas de mortalidad en algunos países, tales como Uruguay y Argentina, son similares a aquellas en los Estados Unidos, con cáncer de mama, pulmón, colon y próstata a la cabeza. En contraste, en países del lado de Pacífico en Sud América, incluyendo Chile, Perú, y Ecuador, el cáncer gástrico y de  vesícula son más prevalentes.
Aún dentro del mismo país, la epidemiología del cáncer puede variar ampliamente, explica el Dr. Cazap. Grandes ciudades en Argentina y Brasil, por ejemplo, tienen diferentes tasas de cáncer que aquellas encontradas en las provincias del norte de Argentina o la jungla brasilera. La estrategia del cuidado de la salud y los planes de control del cáncer de cada país deben ser adaptados a las realidades locales y regionales, señala.
La incidencia y mortalidad de muchos tumores está aumentando en muchos países latinoamericanos, mayormente debido al envejecimiento de la población, la urbanización, y la occidentalización de los estilos de vida. Las dos barreras para el cuidado del cáncer efectivo son la falta de estrategias organizadas por la prevención primaria y secundaria y las limitaciones en el acceso al cuidado, dice el Dr. Cazap. Contribuyendo a estos obstáculos es el hecho por el cual la investigación es pobre a nivel local y regional, así que los datos poblacionales disponibles son escasos o fragmentados.
ASCO está promoviendo la investigación en países menos desarrollados a través de su International Clinical Trials Workshop, que proporciona educación de investigación la cual es adaptada a temas locales de reclutamiento, consentimiento informado, y regulación. Las enfermeras de investigación y data managers participan en el workshop junto con los médicos.  En el 2009, Argentina fue la sede del primer International Clinical Trials Workshop de ASCO. El Dr. Cazap, que es Miembro del Directorio de ASCO y enlace al Comité de Asuntos Internacionales de ASCO, dice que el workshop de Argentina sirvió como el piloto que ha llevado a mejoras en Workshops posteriores, ahora programadas para Egipto, Rumania y Uruguay en el 2011.
"ASCO fue instrumental en el desarrollo organizativo de SLACOM," declara el Dr. Cazap, indicando que ASCO ayudó a apoyar el entrenamiento organizativo y siendo mentor para el staff superior de SLACOM. ASCO y SLACOM continúan colaborando de muchas formas, presentando cuatro Best of ASCO Meetings anualmente en la región y planificando International Clinical Trials Workshops adicionales luego del de Uruguay en 2011.
"ASCO y SLACOM son socios ideales," informa el Dr. Cazap. "ASCO puede proveer experiencia científica y organizativa, programas bien desarrollados y prototipos para los programas futuros propios de SLACOM. De su parte, SLACOM puede proveer consejos locales y regionales, colaboración en educación, y la promoción de ASCO en América Latina.  A medida que ASCO expande su programa internacional, las experiencias y pilotos Latinoamericanos sirven como ejemplos que puede ser duplicados en otras regiones del mundo."

Oncology Societies Advance Cancer Care around the World

Advancing Research a Goal of Latin American Society
Founded in 2004, SLACOM-the Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology-already has 2,000 members. It includes all of South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. As might be expected in such a huge area, the prevalence of cancers varies widely. SLACOM's founder and President, Eduardo ¬Cazap, MD, a medical oncologist and cancer researcher in Buenos Aires, describes some of these variations:

The cancer incidence and mortality rates in some countries, such as Uruguay and Argentina, are similar to those in the United States, with breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers in the lead. In contrast, in countries on the Pacific side of South America, including Chile, Peru, and Ecuador, gastric and gallbladder cancers are more prevalent.
Even within the same country, cancer epidemiology can vary widely, Dr. Cazap explains. Big cities in Argentina and Brazil, for example, have different cancer rates than those found in the Argentina's northern provinces or the Brazilian jungle. Each country's health-care strategy and cancer control plans must be adapted to the local and regional realities, he points out.
The incidence and mortality for many cancers is rising in most Latin American countries, largely due to the aging of the population, urbanization, and the westernization of lifestyles. Two barriers to effective cancer care are the lack of organized strategies for primary and secondary prevention and the limitations in access to care, Dr. Cazap says. Contributing to these obstacles is the fact that research is poor at the local and regional level, so the population data available are scarce or fragmented.
ASCO is furthering research in less-developed countries through its International Clinical Trials Workshop, which features research education that is adapted to local issues of accrual, informed consent, and regulation. Research nurses and data managers participate in the workshop along with physicians. In 2009, Argentina was the site of ASCO's first International Clinical Trials Workshop. Dr. Cazap, who is an ASCO Board of Directors Member and liaison to ASCO's International Affairs Committee, says that the Argentina workshop served as a pilot that has led to improvements in later workshops, now slated for Egypt, Romania, and Uruguay in 2011.
"ASCO was instrumental in the organizational development of SLACOM," Dr. Cazap states, noting that ASCO helped support the organizational training and mentoring for SLACOM senior staff. ASCO and SLACOM continue to collaborate in a number of ways, presenting four Best of ASCO meetings in the region annually and planning additional International Clinical Trials Workshops after the one in Uruguay in 2011.
"ASCO and SLACOM are ideal partners," Dr. Cazap notes. "ASCO can provide scientific and organizational expertise, well-developed programs, and prototypes for SLACOM's own future programs. For its part, SLACOM can provide local and regional advice, collaboration in education, and promotion of ASCO in Latin America. As ASCO expands its international program, Latin American experiences and pilots serve as examples that can be duplicated in other regions of the world."
